MICROM 2025 – MICROplastics in Organic-rich Matrices

Novi Sad, Serbia | November 26-27, 2025

Who we are

Welcome Letter

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of Educons University and our esteemed project partners, the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research and the University of Galway, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to MICROM 2025 – MICROplastics in Organic-rich Matrices, taking place in Novi Sad, Serbia, on November 26-27, 2025.

MICROM 2025 aims to bring together leading experts, researchers, and policymakers to discuss the latest advancements in microplastics research, particularly in organic-rich matrices such as soil, compost, and sediments. As microplastic pollution continues to pose significant environmental and health challenges, this conference provides a platform for scientific exchange, innovative solutions, and collaborative efforts toward mitigation strategies.

The program is structured around four key topics

  1. Analytical approaches for microplastics in organic-rich matrices

Moderator: Dr. Fangzhu Wu | Keynote Speaker: Prof. Christian Laforsch

  • Advances in microplastic extraction techniques for soil, compost, and sediments
  • Standardisation and validation of collection, extraction, and analysis methods for organic-rich matrices
  • Micro FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, and thermal analysis applications
  • Emerging analytical technologies and future trends
  1. Sources, fate, and transport of microplastics in the environment

Moderator: Prof. Aleksandra Tubic | Keynote Speaker: Dr. Amy Lusher

  • Contributions of agricultural practices (plastic mulches, foils) to microplastic pollution
  • Microplastics in wastewater sludge and compost: pathways to soil and be on (underground water, streams, and rivers)
  • Environmental factors influencing microplastic degradation and transformation
  • Modelling microplastic transport in organic-rich systems
  • Interactions between microplastics, organic matter, and pollutants
  • Analysis of microplastic particles in aquatic environments
  • Microplastic research in the atmosphere
  1. Impact and risk assessment of microplastics and associated additives

Moderator: Dr. Liam Morrison | Keynote Speaker: Prof. Jacob de Boer

  • Toxicological studies on microplastics and chemical additives (e.g., phthalates, PBDEs)
  • Effects on soil health, microbial communities, and crop growth
  • Human exposure through food chains and potential health impacts
  • Risk assessment frameworks for organic-rich environments
  • Policy implications and regulatory measures for reducing microplastic impacts.
  1. Project networking session

Moderators: Dr. Ana Mendez, Dr. Ljiljana Milošević

  • Connecting research teams, institutions, and innovators working on microplastics
  • Short project presentations from EU, national, and local initiatives
  • Opportunities for collaboration, joint publications, and future partnerships
  • Showcasing interdisciplinary approaches and project success stories
  • Featured projects will be included in the MICROM2025 Book of Abstracts

We look forward to welcoming you to Novi Sad!

We are honored to host prominent speakers and experts in this field and look forward to expert discussions that will shape the future of microplastics research. Novi Sad, known for its vibrant academic community and cultural heritage, provides an inspiring environment for scientific collaboration and networking.

We sincerely thank all participants, speakers and partners for their contributions to MICROM 2025. Your insights and expertise will make this conference a significant milestone in advancing knowledge and solutions for microplastic pollution in organic-rich environments.
