Travel to Novi Sad
Your Journey Awaits
Novi Sad, with its blend of rich history and vibrant culture, is easily accessible via multiple transport options.
Novi Sad is a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural city
Novi Sad is the second largest city in Serbia and the administrative seat of the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina and the South Bačka District. Novi Sad is a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural city – a home for people belonging to 26 different ethnic groups, confessing 8 different religions and natively speaking four of six official languages.
The earliest settlement in Petrovaradin on the right bank of the Danube River dates from the Roman period. The permanent settlement on the left river bank was founded in 1694, when Serb merchants, barred from settling in the Habsburg-controlled Petrovaradin fortress due to their faith, formed a colony across the Danube. The Latin name for the left bank settlement, stemming from the establishment of city rights in 1748, is “Neoplantae” meaning “New Sowing”. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the city became an important trading and manufacturing centre, as well as the center of a renaissance in Serbian culture in that period, earning the epitaph of Serbian Athens.
Today, the urban area of Novi Sad has a population of 300,000, while its municipal area has a population of 350,000. It is an industrial and financial center of the Serbian economy, as well as a major cultural center.

Background Info
Serbia is a landlocked country located in the Balkans, its north covers the fertile flatlands of the Pannonian Plain and its south is an expanse of rolling hills and valleys mazing through high mountains. The capital of Serbia is Belgrade. The country has two autonomous provinces, with Novi Sad as the administrative centre of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. Vojvodina covers the Pannonian Plain in Serbia, its borders set by the expansive Danube River and Sava. The province was in great part marsh and wetlands before large drainage projects of the Austro-Hungarian Empire; part of which included colonization from other constituent people of the Empire and contributed to Vojvodina’s large diversity today. See the Wikipedia entry for more information.
